
London born, Rob left to join the Royal Air Force spending his last two and a half years in Singapore. After leaving the RAF he went into civil aviation and spent a few years in Libya, north africa, helping to service air transport for the oil exploration industries. Returning to england in mid-1960 he married whitehaven girl, Valerie Watson resulting in two sons, stephen and graeme. eight years at luton airport with one of the largest charter airlines - court line aviation - helping to fly millions of holiday makers all over the world, visiting many foreign parts as part of the job. He came to live and work in Whitehaven as a travel agent manager in 1974. Over the intervening years Rob was an active member and president of the whitehaven & district chamber of trade and commerce. As president he became involved with the Whitehaven Maritime festival and becoming, privately, a founder director of the festival in 1998. He was BBC radio cumbria's ‘travel consultant' for a number of years.
Rob retired in 2000 but got involved, part time, with the local tourist attraction, the rum story.
Although retired as a festival director, he is still a part time volunteer, helping out when needed and talent spotting for future festivals. In 2002 became the whitehaven town crier.
In 2005 Rob became the leader of the whitehaven time gun crew.
He believes strongly that when you live and work in a place you should try and put something back into the community - hence a reluctance to say no to anyone who comes up with a good idea!
